Catalogue: Convergences / Divergences

This catalogue was published in the occasion of the exhibition Convergences / Divergences, Primitive Sources of The Modern, curated by Ariel Jiménez at JCMAC’s Miami Design District space, on view November 29, 2018 – October 12, 2019.

The Juan Carlos Maldonado Art Collection of modern and contemporary art acquired the most comprehensive to date set of indigenous Ye’Kwana pieces, collected through decades of arduous work and research by Venezuelan anthropologist Charles Brewer-Carías since the 1960’s.

Convergences / Divergences, Primitive Sources of The Modern presents artifacts from this important acquisition and aims to explore some points of contact between the artistic production of the Ye’Kwana tribe, and some of the iconic pieces of Western geometric abstraction in JCMAC’s collection.

The catalogue features texts by Juan Carlos Maldonado and Ariel Jiménez and includes information and illustrations of 48 Ye’Kwana baskets, biographies of 13 participating artists as well as illustrations of the works.
